Filtration and humidification

The recent reported outbreak of respiratory infections in the Chinese city of Wuhan has been identified as being caused by 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel Coronavirus).

The number of reports of infection has been rising quickly during January 2020, with 2798 confirmed cases at time of writing.  The current assessment from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is that the risk of this event remains ‘very high’ in China, and ‘high’ at a regional and global level. Keep up to date with the latest news on the WHO website.

The Intersurgical filter range provides an effective barrier that prevents cross contamination between patients, respiratory equipment and the clinical environment.  We provide a choice of electrostatic and pleated mechanical filters that have been independently tested and proven to be highly efficient, providing trusted protection against bacterial and viral cross contamination.

i-gel O2 Resus Pack included in TCCC guidelines

We are delighted to announce that earlier this year the Intersurgical i-gel O2 Resus Pack* was included in the US Military Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) guidelines for securing an airway in the Tactical Evacuation (TACEVAC) phase of care.

TCCC is the standard of care for Prehospital Battlefield Medicine and TACEVAC relates to the care given to a casualty whilst still under fire on the battlefield. The Committee on TCCC issue and regularly update guidelines. These guidelines include airway management and the use of supraglottic airways.

The original TCCC guidelines were published in 1996 and an update in 2012 reaffirmed support for the use of SADs for the TACEVAC phase of care, but did not recommend a specific device, as they did not feel there was sufficient evidence at the time to do so. However, in the latest update, i-gel has been designated as the 'preferred Extraglottic Airway (EGA)' as it was decided it had a number of characteristics that make it favourable for use on the battlefield.

They concluded that current evidence suggests the i-gel performs as well or better than the other SADs available and has other advantages in:

• Ease of training
• Size & weight
• Cost
• Safety
• Simplicity of use

The gel-filled cuff in the i-gel both eliminates the need for cuff pressure monitoring during flight and reduces the risk of pressure-induced neuropraxia to cranial nerves in the oropharynx and hypopharynx as a complication of SAD use.

The latest changes to the TCCC guidelines does the following things:

• Adds extraglottic airways (EGAs) as an option for airway management in Tactical Field Care;
• Recommends the i-gel as the preferred EGA in TCCC because its gel-filled cuff makes it simpler to use than EGAs with air-filled cuffs and also eliminates the need for monitoring of cuff pressure;

You can find all of the above details confirmed in the abstract of the article, 'Extraglottic Airways in Tactical Combat Casualty Care: TCCC Guidelines Change 17-01 28 August 2017 published in the Journal of Special Operations Medicine by Otten EJ, Montgomery HR, Butler FK Jr.

Patient connections

Intersurgical provide a comprehensive, high quality range of cathether mounts and elbows.
Our patient connections provide a safe, secure and convenient connection between the breathing system and the patient's airway. They are available in three tube formats: Flexible, Superset™ and Smoothbore.

Flexible catheter mounts are manufactured from Flextube™ and have a unique clip feature to provide an airtight and secure connection.

Superset™ catheter mounts have a concertina design to allow the length and position to be adjusted to allow optimal patient comfort and positioning.

Smoothbore catheter mounts provide improved flow characteristics and reduced volume.

Our range of patient connections include fixed and double swivel elbows and a variety of ports, providing an option for various clinical needs, including luer ports for secure attachment of gas sampling lines, 7.6 mm port and flip top cap for insertion of suction catheters, and a double flip top cap with seal to allow for both brochoscopy and bronchial suction via one port.

For added safety all Intersurgical port caps are fixed to the connectors, to prevent loss or misplacement in use.

For further information visit our catheter mount and elbow pages or contact us directly.

Create your oral care programme

View our choice of toothbrushes, day kits and protocols for ICU patient care.

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cost concern in modern hospitals. A combination of oral care treatments in a proper oral care protocol means care providers can more efficiently prevent oropharyngeal bacterial biofilm build up. This in turn leads to a reduction of VAP and aspiration pneumonias and greatly reduces associated treatment costs.

Our extensive choice of soft-bristle toothbrushes, treatment packs and OroCareTM day kits with mouthwash offers you all the tools needed to create your own oral care programme.

Full descriptions and clinical evidence are available to help make the choice easier. Please contact us to discuss options further.

Intersurgical EcoLite™ high concentration mask

The lightest and most comfortable mask available.
The Intersurgical EcoLite™ high concentration mask is made from a soft thermoplastic elastomer that enables a secure yet comfortable face seal.

The chin section of the mask has been extended and two integral seals ensure that the mask fits a wider range of face shapes.

An incurved nose seal is designed to prevent oxygen entering the patient’s eyes, eliminating the need for a separate metal nose clip making the product MRI compatible.  The unique nose seal is designed to equalise the pressure exerted on the nose as the seal conforms to differing nose shapes. These design features combine to provide an improved seal on the patient’s face, which in turn, results in higher oxygen concentrations as less ambient air enters the mask.

The mask retaining elastic can be fitted either above or below the patient’s ears depending on the patient’s face shape. In the “below ear” position it eliminates the discomfort and longer term trauma created by elastic to the top of the patient’s ears.  A choice of “under chin” or “on chin” positions provides a better fit on a wider range of patient face shapes.

Low resistance safety valves allow the patient to breathe room air should the oxygen supply fail or be inadequate to meet peak flow requirements.

The material forming the body of the mask is clear, permitting visualisation of the patient’s nose and lips. It is also rigid enough to maintain the mask’s shape during transportation and use.
